Scott Grieger

Painter, educator, and longtime Chair of Fine Arts at Otis College of Art and Design, Scott Grieger created a striking series of small, mystical portraits during the mid-1980s. His subjects included punk musicians, drug users, and street people living near East Melrose Avenue, individuals he befriended and gained the trust of. Suspended in fields of color and detached from their bodies, these floating faces appear like fragments of dreams. Grieger described them as “the masks that the individuals wore and hid behind,” revealing both the confidence and vulnerability of his young sitters. His works hover between the real and…
