“Toys are the vehicles through which we make the childhood discovery that the ‘world-as-it-is’ isn’t the only world there is,” says Axel Wilhite.
Created as the exhibition catalog for Play Date: Toys by Artists, this custom “five-suit” poker deck features each artwork from the exhibition on its own card. Both a record of the show and a toy in its own right, the deck extends the spirit of Play Date beyond the gallery into something to hold, shuffle, collect, and play with.
About the exhibition
Curated by Axel Wilhite, Play Date: Toys by Artists takes inspiration from the seminal 1975 exhibition Artists Make Toys, staged at the Clocktower in New York. Play Date brings together Chris Burden’s Spyder-Man—which appeared in that same Clocktower exhibition—with new toys by established and emerging artists.
