An original hand-painted minhwa painting by Soonja Yoo.
Minhwa (민화), or Korean folk painting, is known for its vivid colors, expressive imagery, and symbolic themes reflecting wishes for good fortune, longevity, and happiness.
Carp draws on the traditional association of carp with perseverance, achievement, and transformation. The legend of a carp overcoming the currents at the Dragon Gate and becoming a dragon has long inspired paintings in Korea, expressing hopes for academic success and advancement in life.
In this work, a large carp curves upward through layered waves, its patterned scales forming a sweeping arc within a warm golden circle. Multicolored dots enliven its face, while curling, cloud-like forms gather above its open mouth. A deep blue border frames the scene, emphasizing the fish’s movement and giving this traditional subject a vivid, imaginative presence.
