An original hand-painted minhwa painting by Rebecca Mercier.
Minhwa (민화), or Korean folk painting, is known for its vivid colors, expressive imagery, and symbolic themes reflecting wishes for good fortune, longevity, and happiness.
Carp and River brings together carp, traditionally associated with perseverance and achievement, and lotus flowers, associated with purity and renewal. These familiar subjects offer an uplifting image of growth and vitality.
In this work, two carp rise through overlapping waves beneath pink-tipped lotus blossoms, a broad green leaf, and a slender seedpod. Carefully outlined scales and pale, flowing fins contrast with the dense rhythm of blue-gray water, while white droplets suggest splashing movement. A warm golden background opens above the river, giving the composition a balance of lively motion and quiet space.
