An original hand-painted minhwa painting by Kyungja Kim.
Minhwa (민화), or Korean folk painting, is known for its vivid colors, expressive imagery, and symbolic themes reflecting wishes for good fortune, longevity, and happiness.
Hen and Chicks presents a lively family scene, evoking care, togetherness, and the flourishing of new life. The gathering of adult birds and their young offers a warm expression of family bonds and hopes for future generations.
In this work, a rooster with sweeping black-and-gold tail feathers stands beside a hen tending to a group of small yellow chicks. Broad leaves, curling vines, and hanging gourds surround the birds, while tiny insects animate the ground below. Warm rust and yellow accents contrast with the soft green background, creating a richly detailed scene filled with movement and quiet domestic warmth.
