An original hand-painted minhwa painting by Soonja Yoo.
Minhwa (민화), or Korean folk painting, is known for its vivid colors, expressive imagery, and symbolic themes reflecting wishes for good fortune, longevity, and happiness.
K-Pop Tiger & Chaekgado brings together the tiger, a familiar subject in Korean folk painting, and chaekgado, the Korean tradition of bookshelf painting. Featuring books alongside scholars’ objects and decorative treasures, chaekgado reflects an appreciation for learning, collecting, and cultural refinement. Here, this traditional subject meets the energy and playfulness of contemporary K-pop culture.
In this work, a tiger wearing oversized headphones, round red sunglasses, and a blue traditional-style jacket stands among towering stacks of books. A colorful star-topped microphone and curling striped tail animate the central figure, while patterned book covers and a brush-filled holder add intricate decorative details. Above, the words “Thank you,” embellished with small flowers, lend the scene a cheerful note of gratitude. The composition creates a playful encounter between Korean cultural heritage and contemporary popular culture.
