An original hand-painted minhwa painting by Soonja Yoo.
Minhwa (민화), or Korean folk painting, is known for its vivid colors, expressive imagery, and symbolic themes reflecting wishes for good fortune, longevity, and happiness.
Mouse and Peonies brings a playful character into a floral setting. Traditionally associated with wealth and prosperity, peonies lend an auspicious quality to this whimsical scene.
In this work, a mouse wearing a purple robe with blue trim and green trousers stands beside flowering peonies, its hands clasped at its waist and its long tail curling outward. Pink and red blossoms rise among green and gold leaves, while two stylized white clouds float overhead. A warm peach background and flowing bands of earth beneath the figure give the composition a gentle rhythm and a storybook charm.
