An original hand-painted minhwa painting by Soonja Yoo.

Minhwa (민화), or Korean folk painting, is known for its vivid colors, expressive imagery, and symbolic themes reflecting wishes for good fortune, longevity, and happiness.

Peonies draws on the flower’s traditional association with wealth and prosperity in Korean painting. A familiar subject in minhwa, the peony expresses wishes for a flourishing life through its abundant, layered blossoms.

In this work, clusters of deep red and pale pink flowers rise above branching green stems and broad leaves. Small buds extend beyond the open blooms, while delicate yellow centers and softly shaded petals add detail and depth. Set against a warm cream background, the arrangement balances rich floral color with generous open space, creating a quiet celebration of growth, beauty, and abundance.
