An original hand-painted minhwa painting by Soonja Yoo.
Minhwa (민화), or Korean folk painting, is known for its vivid colors, expressive imagery, and symbolic themes reflecting wishes for good fortune, longevity, and happiness.
Vessels and Flowers draws on Gimyungjulgido, a Korean still-life tradition that developed as a distinct genre during the nineteenth century. These paintings bring together treasured vessels, flowering branches, fruits, and scholars’ objects, reflecting an appreciation for collecting, learning, and the beauty of everyday life. Their subjects often carry auspicious meanings, expressing wishes for prosperity, longevity, and well-being.
In this work, books, brushes, decorative vessels, and an ornate hanging timepiece form an imaginative arrangement against an open background. Intricate patterns and vivid accents give each object a distinct presence, continuing a tradition that celebrates both material beauty and aspirations for a fulfilling life.
