An original hand-painted minhwa painting by Soonja Yoo.

Minhwa (민화), or Korean folk painting, is known for its vivid colors, expressive imagery, and symbolic themes reflecting wishes for good fortune, longevity, and happiness.

Vessels and Flowers draws on Gimyungjulgido, a Korean still-life tradition that developed as a distinct genre during the nineteenth century. These paintings bring together treasured vessels, flowering branches, fruits, and scholars’ objects, reflecting an appreciation for collecting, learning, and the beauty of everyday life. Their subjects often carry auspicious meanings, expressing wishes for prosperity, longevity, and well-being.

In this work, stacked books form a tall central arrangement, accompanied by a floral-patterned cup, a sculptural brush holder filled with brushes, and a small decorative dish. Red and green book covers contrast with softly shaded vessels, while delicate floral and geometric patterns connect the objects across the composition. The arrangement evokes a quiet appreciation for study, creativity, and the objects that enrich daily life.
