An original hand-painted minhwa painting by Soonja Yoo.
Minhwa (민화), or Korean folk painting, is known for its vivid colors, expressive imagery, and symbolic themes reflecting wishes for good fortune, longevity, and happiness.
Vessels and Flowers draws on Gimyungjulgido, a Korean still-life tradition that developed as a distinct genre during the nineteenth century. These paintings bring together treasured vessels, flowering branches, fruits, and scholars’ objects, reflecting an appreciation for collecting, learning, and the beauty of everyday life. Their subjects often carry auspicious meanings, expressing wishes for prosperity, longevity, and well-being.
In this work, a shallow bowl of peaches and golden fruit rests on a tall, dark stand, surrounded by a green floral vase, a sculptural ewer, a cylindrical vessel, and a lidded bowl. Crackle-like geometric patterns contrast with delicate floral motifs and curling decorative lines, while vivid green, pink, and yellow enliven the softly shaded forms. Set against an open background, the arrangement celebrates the beauty of treasured objects and the simple abundance of everyday life.
