An original hand-painted minhwa painting by Soonja Yoo.
Minhwa (민화), or Korean folk painting, is known for its vivid colors, expressive imagery, and symbolic themes reflecting wishes for good fortune, longevity, and happiness.
Vessels and Flowers draws on Gimyungjulgido, a Korean still-life tradition that developed as a distinct genre during the nineteenth century. These paintings bring together treasured vessels, flowering branches, fruits, and scholars’ objects, reflecting an appreciation for collecting, learning, and the beauty of everyday life. Their subjects often carry auspicious meanings, expressing wishes for prosperity, longevity, and well-being.
In this work, pink blossoms rise from a tall vase patterned with crackle-like lines, beside two stacked bundles of books in green patterned covers. An orange-red bowl rests on top, while a dark blue lid with curling gold motifs sits below. Delicate petals and branching stems soften the geometric arrangement, bringing together the pleasures of reading, flowers, and decorative objects in a quiet celebration of everyday beauty.
